Ya está disponible la esperada nueva novela de misterio "Asesinato en el Campus" del escritor César García Muñoz para la que he tenido el inmenso placer de hacer la ilustración de portada.

La idea de César era muy clara desde el principio, la chica pelirroja con la melena destacando, el edificio universitario, crucifijo... Mi tarea era darle cuerpo y crear una imagen acorde con la línea de la novela y lo que el autor quería transmitir.

 Now available the expected new mystery novel "Murder on the Campus" written by César García Muñoz for which I had the great pleasure of doing the cover illustration.

The idea of ​​César was very clear from the beginning, the red-haired girl with hair highlighting, the university building, crucifix ... My task was to give body and create an image that suits the line of the novel and what the author wanted to feel.

Aquí teneis el proceso de la ilustración, desde el primer boceto en grises. Una de las dificultades era la perspectiva forzada para ver bien a la chica a pesar de ser una perspectiva larga con lago y edificio al fondo. La luz y el color también fue un tema complejo, tras varias pruebas, variaciones y la acertada opinión de César pasamos toda la imagen a verdes y ocres excepto el pelo de ella.

 Here you have the process, from the first grayscale sketch. One difficulty was the forced perspective to see clearly the girl despite being a deep view with lake and building in the background. The light and color was also a complex issue, after several tests, variations and the successful opinion of César  we put the whole image green and ocher except her hair.

 Por último apliqué más manchas y textura a la imagen, buscando un poco ese efecto de neblina y cierto difuminado de la imagen.

Finally I applied more staining and texture to the image, looking a little for the effect of fog and some blurring of the image.

Fucking Comic Page

Hace unos días me pidieron una prueba de unas páginas de Batman, sobre un guión de David Hine. El cómic arranca con la "típica escena" de Batman sobre el tejado con un delincuente a punto de armarla parda en un callejón. Ya que es mi primer batman me apetecía dibujar esa secuencia de la primera página.

El número de viñetas y la narración de cada una está descrito en el guión, mi tarea en este caso es darle cuerpo conjunto y conseguir que lo que pretende el guionista se plasme visualmente en la página (vamos, que quede guay y se entienda xD).

 La  primera decisión clara es que batman sobre el tejado sea el protagonista de la página (¡cómo no!) , es una primera página con muchas viñetas, pero dentro de lo posible empezar con ese concepto de "intento de splash-page" me parece lo correcto.

A few days ago I was asked to test a few pages of Batman, with a screenplay by David Hine. The comic starts with the "typical scene" of Batman over the roof with a criminal about to kick up a fuss at an alley. Since this is my first batman I wanted to draw the sequence of the first page.

The number of pannels and the narrative of each is described in the script, my task here is to flesh together and get what the writer intended to be translated visually on the page (do it cool and understandable xD) .

The first clear decision is to make the batman on the roof the main part of the page (why not!) Is a first page with many pannels, but as far as possible to start with this "attempt of splash-page" concept seems right .

 La segunda viñeta (vista del callejón desde los bat-ojos) es el enlace entre la secuencia y nuestra escena protagonista. En el cómic original (batman #708) el dibujante baja el punto de vista directamente, la escena es más fácil de entender pero yo quería mostrar cómo lo ve batman desde arriba realmente, después de darle mucha guerra me gusta bastante esa viñeta, no es muy habitual una escena casi en planta  pero ver las cosas cómo las vería él creo que le da un matiz de identificación con su posición... siempre vigilando desde arriba ;)

The second panel (view of the alley from the bat-eyes) is the link between sequence and our hero scene. In the original comic (Batman # 708) the artist directly lowers the view the scene is easier to understand but I wanted to show how  Batman really looks from above, after giving a lot of trouble I quite like that panel, it is not very common an almost ground scene but I think that gives a hint of identification with his position ... always watching from above ;)

Los encargos de cómic normalmente están sujetos a unos plazos criminales, la idea es llevar mi técnica de ilustración a la página, pero en lugar de pintar con color directamente decido que será más rápido realizarlas en gris (values) y luego añadir capas de color. El resultado no es el mismo, pero ahorrar un par de días por página puede marcar la diferencia entre conseguir llevar a buen puerto un encargo o no.

Usually, comic order deadlines are criminal, the idea is to take my illustration technique to the page, but instead of painting with color directly decide that I shall perform them faster in gray (values) and then add layers of color. The result is not the same, but saving a couple of days per page can make the difference between getting success with an assignment or not.

Finalmente cambio la base de color para las viñetas, un ligero contraste para separar de la escena de fondo y mantenerla en un plano dominante.

Finally I change the base color for panels, a slight contrast to separate the background scene and keep it in a dominant plane.

 Este es el resultado final... por ahora xD, es posible que siga trabajando en ella, creo que hay cosas que se pueden mejorar y añadir algunos matices más de color.

"Jäak" Illustration

Para este episodio he hecho una sóla ilustración que sirve de presentación al personaje de Jäak Vihyou, quería un primer plano de mirada potente y con la mitad de la cara en sombras, un pequeño guiño al título del post "Verdades y Mentiras"

For this episode I have done a single picture that serves as introduction to the character of Jäak Vihyou, I wanted a close-up of powerful look and half the face in shadow, a small wink to the title of the this chapter "Truths and Lyes"

Os dejo el proceso y las referencias que he utilizado, en esta ocasión la cabeza de yeso iluminada me sirvió de guia durante casi todo el proceso y luego busqué también algunas fotos del actor Guy Pierce para ver algunos detalles en un modelo natural.

I leave the process and the references I have used, this time the plaster head illumined served me as guide for almost the entire process and then also looked for some pictures of the actor Guy Pierce to see some details in a natural model.
